Built around 123 D.C. as a tomb for Emperor Adrian and his family, Castel Sant’Angelo has an unusual destiny in art-historical landscape of the capital. While all the other monuments of the Roman period are overwhelmed, reduced to ruins or caves examination materials to be recycled into new, modern buildings, the castle – through a series of developments and changes that seem to slip into a seamless continuity – with almost two thousand years to the fate and history of Rome.
The Nacional Museum di Castel Sant’Angelo, home to many collections, largely enjoyed by the general public, resulting in part from donations from individuals partly from the very heart of the castle, such as fine ceramic Renaissance or fragments of the monumental sculptural decoration of the Roman era, emerged from the bowels of the tomb of Adrian in the course of several campaigns of excavation and restoration.
